The converted Katy depot in Sedalia.

The Columbia (MO) spur of the MKT spans 9 miles and connects to the Katy Trail at McBaine, Missouri.

There’s a historic rail bridge over the Missouri at Boonville, with a lifting midsection.

Throughout its existence, Sedalia has been a town that people have passed through – cattlemen, railroad workers, travelling salesmen – and in the nineteenth century it had something of a reputation for vice. There were so many brothels that the town’s services were paid for out of the fines levied on red light activities. The ladies worked in bars, the bars hired musicians, and it was in Sedalia that piano player Scott Joplin honed his craft. The town hosts an annual Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival.

Thirty-five miles further down the line, Clinton is named not after a third president but a former New York governor, DeWitt Clinton. He promoted the Erie Canal, which opened up access to the eastern seaboard for midwestern farmers and their goods via the MKT Railroad and other lines: a great many towns are named either DeWitt or Clinton in his honour. Here the Katy Trail ends – for now. There are detached rail-to-trail parts of the old MKT in Dallas and Houston TX, and in Tulsa OK. Perhaps one day the whole route will be reunited.
